At 11 p.m. on June 3, 1989, Lu was shot in the left side of his chest by martial law soldiers using dumdum bullets, near Sanlihe shopping mall on Erqi Juchang Road. He died at Fuwai Hospital.

Lu’s father was a veteran cadre and his daughter was a middle school student. His wife had been working as a doctor at Dongfeng Television Factory. But because of the shock of losing her husband, she was unable to do her work there and had to change jobs.
